Biogenic sulfur compounds such as dimethyl sulfide (DMS) are important contributors to the global carbon cycle. The relative differential Raman cross-section of gas-phase DMS, obms, has been measured with visible (Ar-ion laser) and ultraviolet (KrF–laser) excitation in order to assess the applicability of Raman for the direct, quantitative measurement of this compound. Andreae and Crutzen1 have estimated open-ocean dissolved concentrations of these species to be in the range of 1-20 nM. However, that they can be present in much higher concentrations in particular environments. For example, Travena and Jones have measured concentrations on the order of tM in sea ice melts.2 Intracellular concentrations of these compounds are estimated to be orders of magnitude higher in the mM range,3 however, currently these concentrations cannot be measured directly.
