Au colloids have traditionally been widely used as enhancing media in Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). However, methods for preparing increasingly sophisticated, exotic particles are currently appearing in the literature at an astonishing rate. This makes it increasingly important to properly understand the properties of simple spherical Au particles, since they are typically used as a benchmark against which novel particles are assessed. Surprisingly, even now, our knowledge of even the most basic properties of simple spheres, such as the effect that altering particle size has on their SERS enhancement, is still very limited.
