We propose a formalism to evolve software architectures based on multiset transformation. Architectures are specified with relations in structured multisets, and hierarchical structures are also characterized succinctly. Architecture transformations are described as reactions in the multiset. Some general-purpose and domain-specific transformation types are presented, both for basic modifications such as adding/removing entities and for high-level changes like abstraction, refinement and restructuring of architectures. We argue that design decisions behind architecture transformations are exhibited by this means, which facilitates evolution and maintenance.
