Fiber to the home:a summary of bellsouth's first office application

In 1986, BellSouth began the process of deploying Fiber in the Loop (FITL) with the intent of providing a broadband network all the way to the customer. Deployment began with Fiber to the Home (FITH) systems in Orlando, Florida, that provided video and telephony services. After several years of FTTH deployment in several trial locations, BellSouth concluded that the technology was both too expensive and too immature for general deployment. BellSouth proceeded to evaluate Fiber to the Curb (FTTC) technology. With cost sharing of the ONU electronics, economical fiber deployment designs, efficient construction and installation methods, and the evolution of industry standards (TR909), BellSouth was able to proceed with general deployment of telephony-based FTTC systems in 1995. The capability of FTTC increased with the addition of high-speed data and video services to the architecture in 1998. With the full service FTTC system, BellSouth significantly increased fiber deployment in the distribution network over the past two years.
