The world-wide energy demand and the irreversible consequences of the excessive use of fossil fuels, have lead to an increased effort for the rational use and production of energy by environmentally friendly means. Technological progress in recent years has allowed the efficient conversion of energy from renewable sources to useable forms of energy, such as electricity and heat. In Europe and the developed world in general, where the land availability for PV installations is scarce and expensive, integrating photovoltaics to buildings by fa?ade mounting or replacing conventional roof materials poses as a cost effective solution with numerous advantages. During this project two grid-connected photovoltaic systems, 50 kW{sub}p in total, were integrated to buildings. The installations serve as research and experimentation centres for an electricity generating company, E.H.N., which bases all its electricity generation on renewable energy sources. All the electricity produced is sold to consumers through the grid of Navarra. A monitoring system was developed and installed to evaluate the performance of the systems. Vital know-how for the construction, operation and maintenance of similar installations was gained. The technical and aesthetic symbiosis of such systems on buildings is demonstrated, giving a new perspective to the rapidly growing EU renewable energy market.
