THE PROTECTIVE EFFICACY OF PORCILIS(R) PESTI IN PIGS CHALLENGED WITH CLASSICAL SWINE FEVER VIRUS

Classical Swine Fever (CSF), a highly contagious disease of swine, is characterized in the acute form by multiple hemorrhage, necrosis, and infarctions of the internal organs with 90 to 100% mortality. In the chronic form, the clinical signs of depression, anorexia, pyrexia, and constipation followed by diarrhoea are less severe and recovery sometimes occurs, especially in mature pigs, to herds affected with low virulent strains of the virus, only neonatal pig death is observed along with abortions and stillbirths. The severity of the disease is enhanced by the secondary invasion of bacteria. It is the most devastating swine infection in Taiwan. The purpose of this research was to study the protective efficacy conferred by Porcilis Pesti. The Porcilis Pesti vaccinated SPF pigs were challenged with the ALD strain of CSFV and the entire disease development were recorded evaluating the protective efficacy of the Porcilis Pesti.
