EAR PANNICULITIS ASSOCIATED WITH HAEMOPHILUS PARASUIS INFECTION EN GROWING-FINISHING PIGS

Infection with Haemophilus parasuis has been commonly associated with polyserositis, arthritis and meningitis in pigs; a syndrome traditionally called Glasser disease. When introduced into naive herds, the organism may be responsible for the development of a more fulminant systemic disease of high morbidity and mortality. These latter cases of acute septicemia are often associated with sudden death and skin discoloration without polyserositis. Haemophilus parasuis is also commonly isolated from cases of suppurative bronchopneumonia either as a primary pathogen or more often as a secondary agent. In rare instances, H. parasuis has also caused acute myositis and fasciitis involving the head and neck which appear swollen (2, RD personal observation).
