During 1999, when the pig industry in South Africa was probably in its worst depression ever a questionnaire was sent out to 320 producers. This constitutes 90% of the producers and probably >95% of the commercial piggeries in the country. The response was 26% with many producers commenting that such a questionnaire was long over due. I hope to draw relationships out of the.questionnaire to assist veterinarians in assessing their efficacy. A questionnaire was devised covering some historical, currentand visionary questions. The majority could be collated via the Microsoft Excel package and relationships between the groupings obtained. The questionnaires were not marked and producers did not need to give their names or addresses so as to maintain anonymity. The address list had been obtained from the South African Pork Producers Organisation (SAPPO), a voluntary group of farmers who represent the organised voice of pig farmers.
