Infection in the urinary tract is a major health problem among sows but is often difficult to diagnose in clinical practice. Urinary tract diseases may account for up to 25% of deaths among sows (1). Infection in the urinary tract often starts with cystitis and from the affected bladder, the infection may ascend to the kidneys or to the uterus. As cystitis may be difficult to diagnose, the prevalence of sows with infection in the bladder may be difficult to estimate. However, in an abattoir survey from The Netherlands, the mean prevalence of cystitis among slaughtered sows was found to be 11 % with a variation among herds between 0% and 35% (2).
