Swine dysentery is a severe, acute to chronic mucohemorrhagic diarrheal disease of pigs which has been reported to occur in virtually all swine-rearing countries. Olson and Rodabaugh4 reported that the combination of lincomycin and spectinomycin demonstrated excellent efficacy. In 1985, Van Leengoed, et. al. reported on the efficacy of the lincomycin-spectinomycin combination for treatment of swine dysentery. In 1996, Dalziel1 (U.K.) reported on the in vitro activity of lincomycin and LINCO-SPECTIN~(TM) (10-100 mu g/mL) in comparison to tiamulin (0.25-1 mu g/mL) for a limited number of strains of Brachyspira hyodysenteriae. In 1996, Molnar published a sensitivity survey on 332 strains of B. hyodysenteriae isolated in Hungary between 1978 and 1992. The author concluded that out of the 7 antibiotics tested, tiamulin had proven to be the most effective antibiotic with MIC values ranging from 0.05 to 50 mu g/mL compared to lincomycin which was considered the second potent antibiotic with MICs ranging from 0.1 to 100 mu g/mL. Knowing that the determination of the susceptibility of bacterial pathogens to antimicrobial agents is of great importance in the selective use of chemotherapeutics. LINCO-SPECTIN?Premix has been proven over the years to be a useful therapy, even though there is a lack of correlation between the minimal inhibitory concentrations in vitro and clinical efficacy for B. hyodysenteriae.
