PREVALENCE OF PORCINE CIRCOVIRUS TYPES 1 AND 2 IN THE BELGIAN PIG POPULATION

The 'Post-weaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS)' has recently drawn the attention of many researchers and practitioners involved in pig health. This syndrome appears in weaned piglets within a critical age of 5 to 13 weeks. Pigs, clinically affected by PMWS can have a poor body condition, a rough hair coat, fever, muscle wasting, dyspnea, hyperpnea, diarrhea, jaundice and anaemia. A general lymphadenopathy and a multifocal to diffuse interstitial bronchopneumonia are the most prominent pathological features of PMWS. The disease is associated with infection with the porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), which is believed to be a more virulent variant of the porcine circovirus type 1 (PCV1), which was isolated as a persistent contaminant of the continuous cell line PK-15.
