EFFICACY OF CEFQUINOME (COBACTAN~(R) 2.5) IN THE TREATMENT OF STREPTOCOCCUS SV1S EXPERIMENTALLY INDUCED MENINGITIS IN PIGLETS

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is an important swine pathogen, which leads in weaning piglets to meningitis, arthritis or septicemia [1], At the moment successful protection strategies are not broadly available and curative intervention is often required. Late generation cephalosporins are generally good candidates for the treatment of human bacterial meningitis [2]. The 4th generation cephalosporin cefquinorne (INN) has a potential use in the treatment of bacterial meningitis in pigs as caused by S.suis serotype 2 [2]. S. suis is highly susceptible to cefquinorne with a MIC 90 = 0.03 mu g/ml. This study reports the curative efficacy of cefquinorne (Cobactan~(R) 2.5%) in the induced S.suis meningitis in piglets.
