The continuous process measurement and improvement methods hold promise for use in objectively measuring and evaluating the ongoing performance of pig production systems, as well as the relationships between interventions that are expected to result in improved or maintained performance levels and the actual level of performance achieved after implementing these interventions (1,2). During 1997, a project for the implementation and maintenance of a health and performance measurement system was designed and initiated at a large, multi-site swine production system in the USA. This paper will illustrate the use of statistical process measurement in the production system to evaluate the impact of growing pig process changes and enable connecting chart signals to assignable causes.
