EVALUATING THE BENEFICIAL PERFORMANCE AND FINANCIAL EFFECTS OF PIG VACCINATION WITH INGELVAC PRRS MLV IN A PRRS-POSITIVE MULTI-SITE PRODUCTION SYSTEM

The PRRS virus is known to have a wide range of impact OB breeding herd and growing pig performance. In some production systems, the impact may be minimal to undetectable, to negative, significant, and sustained (1). Many methods for controlling the negative effects of PRRS virus on growing pigs have been used on farms and are described in the literature. The use of a MLV PRRS vaccine in growing pigs has been criticized by some as a significant and unnecessary expense that has a low likelihood of being proven financially beneficial. It has been suggested that large production systems capable of maintaining three-site and multi-site all- in/all-out pig flow coupled with a "stable" breeding animal population, may create a situation where vaccination of growing pigs is unnecessary (2).
