ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF CEFTIOFUR USE IN PIGLETS FROM BIRTH TO WEANING AND BIRTH TO MARKET

Studies have documented lower mortality rates and higher average daily gains (ADGs) associated with using ceftiofur (Naxcel~(R) Sterile Powder/Excenel~(R) Sterile Powder) in a preweaning program for piglets (1,2). Ceftiofur use reduced preweaning mortality by 47.7% and wean-to-market mortality by 37.7% in one study in Japan (2). Using ceftiofur increased weaning weights by 8% and wean-to-market ADG by 4.1% in the same study. Our objective was to evaluate the economic impact of the use of ceftiofur onmortality and ADG birth-to-market in these studies. The global study (1) included 5427 piglets randomly assigned to receive 3 mg/kg ceftiofur or placebo at 1 day of age, 7 days of age, and weaning. The Japanese study (2) followed 984 piglets treated inthe same manner but followed all the way to market. Table 1 summarizes the results of those trials.
