HEALTH OF PIGS RAISED IN THE SAME PEN FROM FARROW TO FINISH OR FROM WEANING TO FINISH

Many diseases can be controlled via changes in management and production facilities, though the control of respiratory diseases seems to present a challenge. Segregated production systems as multi-site offer a number of advantages but the transport and mingling of the animals stress the pigs. Another way of improving health is to reduce the strain on the pigs (no transport and mingling) and thereby to increase their resistance to infections (1). The objective of the present study was to validate thepotential for controlling respiratory diseases in pigs produced on-site in the same pen from farrow-to-finish (FTF) and by a two-site system in the same pen from weaning-to-finish (WTF).
