DIFLOXACIN INJECTABLE SOLUTION (DIFLOXACIN HCL) FOR THE TREATMENT OF PIGS WITH ACTINOBACILLUS PLEUROPNEUMONIAE

Difloxacin-HCl, a difluorinated quinolone, exerts its bactericidal activity mainly on the binding to the A sub-unit of bacterial DNA-gyrase (1). Difloxacin's potency against Gram-negative bacteria is similar to that of both orbifloxacin and enrofloxacin. Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP), the causative agent of porcine pleuropneumonia, is very common in fattening pigs in the Netherlands. The APP infection may be associated with major economic losses due to acute or chronic pleuropneumonia and reduced daily gain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of 4 different doses (0 - 1.25 - 2.5 -5mg/kg) of intramuscularly injected difloxacin against APP under laboratory conditions.
