Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is a herpesvirus that causes Aujeszky's disease, one of the most important diseases of the pig industry. Most of eradication campaigns are based on the use of marker vaccines that lack the nonessential glycoprotein E (gE). Itenables the detection of wild type PRV-infected pigs in vaccinated populations by using serological assays that detect antibodies to gE. However, the ultimate goal of the eradication program is to stop vaccination. The object of this study was to developa sensitive, specific and safe test for the detection vaccinated as well as wild type virus infected pigs. After eradication of pseudorabies virus, handling of the live virus will be restricted. In this case using baculovirus expressed proteins of PRV in diagnostic tests might be a convenient solution. In addition, baculovirus expression system is a simple and inexpensive way of obtaining recombinant proteins.
