摘要

This paper discusses various methods for the management and evaluation of an academic library Web site. In terms of content and purpose, academic library Web pages have been categorized as four types--home page, directional, reference, and a combination of all three. There are also realities of Web site management in a campus and library environment. These include adherence to campus Web guidelines, the Web as an "add-on" to traditional responsibilities, and the need to maintain access to equipment, software, and training. To ascertain current Web management practices a literature search librarians. The survey elicited these types of management of academic library Web sites--default ("catch-as-catch-can"), total control by the campus Webmaster, library administration, or library universities and libraries have created models for campus-wide Web governance and guides for all aspects of Web page creation and management. A model for Web site management it proposed, consisting of a Webmaster and select committee. The attributes of committee members (e.g., prossessing basic Web-related competencies), and suggested committee functions are listed. The evaluation of an academic library Web site includes assessment of Web site design and content, patron usage, and customer satisfaction. Evaluation of design and content can be done by benchmarking with similar Web sites, by setting guidelines for acceptable error rates and evidence of revision. Evaluation of design and content can be done by benchmarking with similar Web sites, by setting guidelines for acceptable error rates and evidence of revision, and by usability testing. Evaluation of patron usage involves analysis of "hits" through server statistics, page counters, and Web tracking software. Evaluation of customer satisfaction involves user surveys and focus groups. The advantages of effective Web site management and evaluation include better patron service, recognition of Web-related activities in personnel-related issues, and greater recognition for the library both on and off-campus. A bibliography of both print and online sources is included.
