The merger and acquisition fever that has gripped the chemical industry generally portends consolidation throughout the whole chain of coatings, pigment and feedstock production - and it's not over. Battles over the last two years were more than skirmishes - they changed the structure of the industry - and there is more to come. The central drive is to expand market share in limited product lines with specialised end-use against a backdrop of prices too low to justify greenfield expansion. The pigment industry response is to consolidate and to globalise.
