Values of the binary absorption coefficient $mu$-12$/ are obtained in the region of the Herzberg III band of oxygen (220 - 270 nm) for the mixture of oxygen with argon in gas phase for the temperature interval 160 - 295 K and in liquid phase - for T $EQ 141 K. The values of $mu$-12$/ are found to remain constant to within 10% in the whole temperature range studied. The absence of the temperature dependence of the binary absorption coefficient $mu$-12$/ gives evidence that induced absorption of the mixture, governed by it, is determined by absorption of a collision complex O$-2$/ -Ar, which molecules are separated by a distance, comparable with the diameters of molecules.
