Approach to Stall Training: Practical or Pedantic?

For many years, the airline industry has witnessed a number of loss of control accidents following inadvertent approaches to stall. There have been many more accidents in other segments of the industry where sophisticated aircraft with trained — many type-rated — airmen have lost control following a stall event. During one five-week period at the beginning of 2009, there were three approach to stall events — all during ILS approach on the autopilot — that resulted in airline accidents. Granted, there were errors of some sort in each case, but a number of lives were lost during events that airmen ostensibly are trained for in all type-rating programs. One of these accidents has caused a tremendous upheaval — largely political — in the U.S. The resultant congressional act is resulting in a number of new laws and regulations that will have remarkable effects on the U.S. airline industry. Some of these changes will bring welcome and constructive changes. (Some will not.)
