An important phenomenon to be evaluated in the design of subway station platform emergency ventilation systems and evacuation procedures is the effect a growing fire has on the resulting smoke field. For the transit station analyses, transient Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations have been performed, and the results of the CFD simulations have been animated. This has allowed the engineer/architect to have increased confidence in their design in terms of station planning for egress routes and the effectiveness of the ventilation system and obtain a greater insight into the physical processes governing the characteristics of smoke transport.
