Approximately over 1,500 jet fans are installed in tlte tunnels operated by Japan Highway Public Corporation. It is important to clearly grasp their performance in order to optimize the tunnel ventilation design. However this task presents some challenges. The authors have carried out a series of experiments by using actual jet fans installed in the Akarusan Tunnel for over a month. They have concluded that the pressure rise equation based on jet fan thrusts might be more suitable for designing and controlling a ventilation system in a condition of normal temperature in comparison with the equation based on outlet air velocities.
