This paper discusses the aerodynamic issues which govern the performance of a smoke detection system. These effects range from Brownian motion in filters to the dilution of smoke into flows of the order of 800m{sup}3/s. The paper also describes the detection system and discusses smoke production rates and the size of fires which would be detected by this system.
