Non-Destructive Internal Assessment of Concrete Foundations for Major Machinery

The investigation of concrete foundations supporting heavy machinery is frequently necessitated by concerns for both the foundation and equipment serviceability due to the cracks manifested by the concrete surface of the foundations and/or signs of the machinery malfunction (i.e., excessive vibration). This paper presents successful evaluations of large concrete foundations supporting heavy machinery equipment in petrochemical, foundry, automobile, nuclear and other industrial facilities. Development within the last decade of new non-destructive test methods allows the evaluating engineer to look inside the concrete structures to assess the location and extent of such prevailing concrete distresses as cracking, spalling, disbonding and corrosion of embedded steel.
