In recent years there has been considerable interest in the phenomenon of crack closure [1] which occurs when oxidation, plasticity, roughness and out of plane displacements cause the crack faces to remain open when the load is removed. Since the crack cannot completely close, the effective crack driving force, ΔK is reduced and subsequently the material shows an enhanced resistance to fatigue crack growth.
