USE OF THE VDG 40 VIDEOGRADER AS A GRADING CONTROL DEVICE FOR FRENCH HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION

In France, different aggregate fractions are required for public construction, depending on the type of structure to be built. The size control performed on all aggregate brands traditionally consists in grading tests, using ISO fraction sieves. This kind of control is rather expensive, time-consuming, and, sometimes too slow in regard to the building rate requirements. Therefore in the early 1990's, the VDG 40 videograder has been successfully used as an alternative test to control the grading of millions of tons of aggregates produced for several highway construction sites, among which are the A75 and A83 highways projects. For this purpose, a control procedure consistent with sieve control has been set up. The use of the VDG 40 as a grading control device proves efficient and appears especially suitable for large quantities of aggregates. In this perspective, the VDG 40 could become the "quarryman's grading control tool" as well.
