Experimental verification of 3D flowdynamic computer code to be used for environmental pollution control

This paper shows results of the survey carried out in the industrial area of Priolo (Italy) in order to both value air pollution and to test reliability of implementation, worked out by the authors, of 3D computer code used for environmental control. The survey has been carried out in the area between ISAB-ERG petrochemical plant and Belvedere country town. Input data characterising the investigated area has been carried out by: analysis of pollutant emissions coming from the chimney stack of the petrochemical plant, that is pollution sources and analysis of meteorological features of atmosphere above the area throughout the year, i.e.: average air temperature, average relative humidity, both direction and velocities of wind and so on. Subsequently, the most significant data from previous studies has been processed by 3D code in order to determine both spatial and temporal distributions of SO_2 concentration, used as pollution gas tracing, into the atmosphere above the checked area. Some significant SO_3 processed data was compared with that coming from the CIPA environmental steady stations network under corresponding conditions. Comparisons have been carried out in order to control both reliability of SO_2 concentrations output data through measured data and to verify the limits of applicability of computer code under different environmental conditions. Code sensitivity was tested too in case of variation both of velocity and wind direction. Results of the research have allowed us to ascertain both the acceptable reliability of code implementation to control air gaseous pollution trend and to discover real atmospheric pollution of the whole investigated area.
