Regarding the application of the Compact Blast Furnace in mini-mills, the substitution of scarp to the largest possible extent is being aimed at. In this case the energy consumption and the tap-to-tap times can be reduced significantly. The Compact Blast Furnace design is based on the aim to compact each part of the blast furnace to its necessary minimum. Therefore the main characteristics are found in the freestanding tower construction, the application of copper and nodular cast iron staves inside the complete furnace to minimize the refractory lining, the vertical charging belt conveyor and the compact design of the casthouse, stockhouse and hot blast stoves.
