Integrated environmental data management in the Province of Milano (Nothern Italy): the IDROJ.S.I. GIS-WEB

The objectives and first results of the IDRO.I.SI. project, launched by the Province of Milano for managing validating and georeferencing environmental data, are presented. Italian environmental legislation delegates to Italy's provinces supervisiontasks in matter of contaminated sites remediation, groundwater monitoring, regulation of waste water discharges and waste disposal management. These activities imply the need to manage in an integrated manner various connected environmental problems andthe related field data, which are extremely heterogeneous. In order to meet the new challenges, the office for Interventions and Control of Water, Soil and Subsoil of the Province of Milano has launched the IDRO.I.S.I. project for managing, validating and georeferencing all environmental data it deals with, by setting up new technical procedures using computer technology (Valentini et al, 1999).
