Nematic LC with negative dielectric ansiotropy (n-type) is applied ot the fluorescent LC display. Absorption and emission anisotropies are measured in guest-host (GH) n-type LC cells with some kinds of dicroic phosphors. Multicolor switching is demonstrated using a visible excitation light from an electroluminaescent (EL) device. Moreover, a novel fluorescent LCD model in which n-type homeotropic GH LC layer and p-type (positive dielectric anisotropy) homogeneous GH LC layer are stacked is proposed. The fluorescence color swithching is successfully demonstrated and the brightness is about two times higher than that of the fourmer display mode using only p-type fluorescence LCs.
