Fault restoration is an essential feature of a robust modern high speed network. The ability to make a fault transparent to the end user, while the interanl algorithms re-route traffic, is a complex but necessary component of the network operations. In this paper we propose a 4-step fault restoration procedure for a single wavelength failure in WDM networks. While this is not a hard real-time problem, real-time constraints are implicit. Traffic needs to be restored, by rerouting via other feasible paths. The quicker the restoration, the lower is the traffic loss, as well as the corresponding buffering requirements. Also there are QoS requirements to be met in user traffic, that include timing relationships.
