An automated multi-channel recording system for non-conventional electrophysiological measurements is described. Fresh hippocampus or cultured (i.e. organotypic) brain slices are coupled to a 3-dimensional porous microelectrode array (constituted by 32 electrodes) and incubated in an ad-hoc developed measurement chamber at constant temperature. With the developed system, physiological conditions are ensured and multisite stimulations and recordings obtained. Evoked field potentials acquired with the developed system are presented. Technological and electrophysiological aspects are addressed, with particular reference to slices of rat hippocampus coupled to the developed silicon based arrays.
