In order to maintain gas permeability inside the blast furnace at a high rate of pulverized coal injection, various experiments were carried out concerning coke degradation, and these characterizations were discussed in relation to deadman condition of the actual blast furnace. As rates of pulverized coal injection increased, mechanical abrasion of coke increased with an increase of load of burden materials and abrasion distance after solution loss reaction. With a view to decreasing fine coke in the blast furnace, it is effective to enhance cold strength of coke as well as to use high reactivity coke for making the reacted layer thin.
