The recent world-wide economic recessionhas had a profound effect upon North Americanironmaking, including both short term and long termclosures and consolidation, with the probability ofmore to follow. The longer-term trends in blastfurnace progress with increased specific productivity,reduced reductant rates and extended campaign lifeare reviewed. The current raw materials situation isoutlined.
