Three main processes affect coke behaviourbetween the cohesive zone and the hearth in a blastfurnace. These are coke gasification, graphitisationand dissolution. These processes have beeninvestigated in specific projects over the past years.This paper describes in short the three processesand discusses their interaction, and their correlationwith coke properties.Gasification was investigated with a laboratory test,developed to assess burden properties underconditions relevant to the blast furnace. Severalcoke samples were tested using this BFgasification-test. Aspects of coke quality such asreactivity, changes in texture and strength wereexamined.
