The SuPerMagnag system is an innovative magneticsensor able to monitor the sintering degreecontinuously, directly on the sinter strand and over thewhole bed width.The core sensor measures the magnetic permeabilityof the sinter cake, directly correlated with the bivalentiron content of the sinter product and its physicalquality. Positioned on top of the strand, on a ski-typesupport, it moves transversely to provide a completeand continuous mapping of the upper layer sinterquality. Sensible to changes in the sintering degreedue to variations of the solid fuel input but also of theignition conditions, it supplies real-time information,much earlier than with any other monitoring system.The complete system has been installed on the No.2sinter strand at ArcelorMittal Gent, who took in chargethe assembly and installation of the mobile supportingstructure.This sensor can help the operators to select in a morereactive way the solid fuel input or the mix chargingand ignition conditions, and to improve the processregularity and minimise the transverseheterogeneities. Transverse information can be usedas an alarm signal to detect abnormal loadingconditions, ignition failures or maintenance needs.Important gains in terms of energy savings,productivity, quality and environmental impact mightbe obtained with a pay-back period of only a fewmonths.SuPerMagnag observations have already been one ofthe factors that have led to the choice of a new setpoint concerning the solid fuel input level for the Gentsinter strand. This modification has reduced theoverheating hazard, enhanced sinter quality and decreased solid fuel consumption. Furtherimprovements are expected from the ongoingSuPerMagnag integration into the semi-automaticsolid fuel control system of the sinter plant atArcelorMittal Gent.
