OPTIMIZED USE OF BLT~R AND PCI WITH INTELLIGENT SUPERVISOR ASSISTANCE (SACHEM~R), A GUARANTEE FOR TOP CLASS BF EFFICIENCY

Recently, it has been demonstrated that the requirements for efficient Blast Furnace operation are becoming more severe. The evolution, and the tightness, of the raw material market demonstrate that the flexibility and the reaction of blast furnace operation to change are as important as quality and reliability in achieving plant objectives. In order to achieve these objectives for the blast furnace, various components are essential: equipment, process measurements and best practice. In addition to furnace equipment and process modelling, the combination of 'intelligent' supervision and human know-how increase the potential for the furnace management team. In order to reach the required results, the achievement of the objectives depends on using a specific operating style. A real situation is examined in the case of ARCELOR's Sollac-Lorraine where BLT~R, PCI and SACHEM~R (Intelligent Supervisor System) have been installed. Despite difficult local conditions (old plant layout, long distance from the sinter plant, a difficult raw materials market, etc.) but with good, continuous utilisation of the furnace process measurements, know how and with the continuous assistance of SACHEM, high furnace performance levels have been achieved. Recent results of Sollac-Lorraine's 2 blast furnaces are reviewed. In addition to the human furnace specialists, the SACHEM system contributes by applying the best operational practice, in order to take the maximum advantage of the up to date equipment. Typical BF technical results are discussed.
