The phoenix of Non Recovery cokemaking has taken off In selected countries because the traditional slot oven coke makers are facing four big obstacles: aged coke plants, non-compliant coke plants, increased cost to produce coke from older coke plants, and large Investments to replace aged non-compliant coke plants. India, China, USA, Australia, and Columbia are the countries that possess Non Recovery coke plants. In 2001, the total Non Recovery coke produced from the above-mentioned countries amounted to about 43 million tons. New Non Recovery coke plants are coming up in USA, Brazil, and India whereas, China, after initially closing down majority of Non Recovery coke plants, is now pushing ahead to add about 7 million ton of Non Recovery capacity in the immediate future. Other projects planned in USA, Brazil, and India amount to 3.4 mtpy, 1.3 mtpy, 3.3 mtpy capacity, respectively. Thus, total planned Non Recovery coke plants worldwide capacity amount to about 15 mtpy. In developing countries that are facing power and coke shortage, Heat Recovery cokemaking has great potentials. This paper will discuss Non Recovery/Heat Recovery coke production technology from around the world and shed light on why it's going to acquire an Important position In the world future coke production scenario.
