Studies of pure copper which has been exposed for different time periods to artificial and natural sea water, showed the feasibility of using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to determine the charge transfer or polarisation resistance (R_p), corrosion product layer capacitance (C_p), capacitance at the metal/corrosion layer interface (Cr_(dl)), and frequency-independent parameters of the admittance of the diffusion related constant phase element (Y_d, n_d) and transmission line due to the porous corrosion product layers (Y_p, n_p ), in describing the effects of corrosion product layers and biofilms on the biodeterioration of copper in sea water. It is shown that the presence of microorganisms in natural sea water enhances the stability of the protective oxide film formed on the copper surface.
