A computer-implemented method for electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of electrochemical cells. The method comprises applying a periodic disturbance having a predetermined carrier wave shape to an electric potential or current; simultaneously measuring the effect of the periodic disturbance on the other of the potential or current and the displacement or stress of the working electrode of the electrochemical cell; using a lock-in amplifier to extract an electrical parameter signal having a predetermined carrier shape from the other of potential or current and a mechanical parameter signal having a predetermined carrier shape from the displacement or stress measurement signal. This makes it possible to measure the response of two different physical parameters by applying one periodic disturbance to another. The extracted signal components are analyzed to reveal information about the coupling effect between the electrochemical and mechanical behavior of the electrochemical cell.
