The retention effects of amphoteric starch / polyaluminum silicate sulfate (PASS) on wheat straw pulp loaded with talc powders were investigated with dynamic drainage jar fitted with 70 mesh screen. The results showed that amphoteric starch / PASS made greater improvement on retention than its correspondent amphoteric starch at all pH scope from slightly acid to alkaline (at higher pH in particular) and at overall starch levels. The added amount of PASS to reach the maximum in furnish retention appeared not to be proportional to that of starch. The PASS with higher basicities showed better performance when used as retention aids together with amphoteric starch. Different addition sequence between starch and PASS included different retention mechanisms.
