Delamination Monitoring of CFRP Laminates Using Electric Potential Method

Monitoring of delamination is indispensable for CFRP structures. It is, however, very difficult to detect a delamination visually. This demands a new structural health monitoring method. The authors' previous studies showed that the delamination can be monitored with the electric resistance change method. The method provided excellent performance of estimations. The method, however, requires complicated electric circuits and uses a two-probe method: the two-probe method includes effects of the electric resistance change at the electrodes. To resolve these problems, an electric potential change method is employed. In the previous paper, the electric potential change method showed poor performance of estimations for delamination cracks located near the center segment of the charged electrodes. The practical zigzag delamination crack has large effect on the performance of estimation when the delamination crack is located at the segment of the specimen. In the present paper, the new concept is introduced to the electric potential change method to overcome the problem. As a result, the effectiveness of the method is shown by FEM analyses.
