Experience of a group of researchers from Saint Petersburg State Technical University is summarised in this review. This work has been aimed at the synthesis of new non-traditional electron-optical systems for electron spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The basis for it is the idea of the reversed electron-optical problem which leads to new original field structures and design decisions. In this paper, the theory is shortly described of the new charged particle energy analysers called 《Tutankhamon》, 《Arch》, 《Quasicone》 and some others. Their calculated characteristics, such as energy dispersion, angular focusing, timing, etc., are given together with the real parameters of the devices which were made and tested experimentally. The applicability is discussed of the presented decisions to different fields of charged particle spectroscopy. The prospects for developing described methods are discussed and analysed.
