Experiences and analyses have shown that many older shear wall structures lack sufficient strength and ductility capacity to resist the earthquake loads specified in the current codes. This paper presents the results obtained from a feasibility study on the effectiveness of using externally bonded carbon fibre tow sheets for the seismic strengthening and repair of existing reinforced concrete shear walls. The present study consists of both experimental and analytical components. The experimental program, the test results and the correlation with the predictions obtained from an analytical model are presented. Based on the study results, the new retrofit technique is found to be an effective seismic strengthening and repair procedure for reinforced concrete shear walls. The new repair system can be used to recover the initial elastic stiffness and to increase the yield load and ultimate flexural capacity of seismically damaged walls, as well as to enhance the stiffness and ultimate load capacity in the strengthening application of undamaged walls.
