This paper discusses 2-D numerical solution of the inverse geometrical thermal problem consisting of an estimation of the position of the phase change front in a continuous casting process. Proposed algorithms utilize temperature measurements inside the solid phase and the sensitivity coefficients. Solution procedure also involves the application of the Boundary Element Method which simplifies modifications of numerical discretization when position of the front is updated within the iterative process. Intensive computations showed that the phase change front should be modelled by the boundary elements possessing C{sup}1 continuity. This is why the quadratic boundary elements with special placement of the midnodes are used in this work. In order to demonstrate main features of the developed algorithms test case from continuous casting of copper is included.
