The Role of the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research in the Implementation of the Kuwait Environmental Remediation Program

In 2011, Dr. Omar Asem was appointed the Technical Program Director of the Kuwait Environmental Remediation Program, awarded by the United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC). Kuwait sustained significant and widespread environmental damage from the Iraqi invasion before the First Gulf War. The UNCC was established to oversee reparations to injured countries and individuals. She is responsible for technical implementation of the program according to the decisions of the UNCC and directives of Kuwait National Focal Point. The program includes remediation and restoration of war-damaged terrestrial, coastal and marine ecosystems. She described her organization’s role in planning, supervising, and monitoring UNCC directives.
