Background/Objectives. The Sprague Road Ground Water Plume Superfund Site in Odessa, TX, consists of three separate ground water plumes from former chromium plating facilities. A ground water pump-and-treat system was installed in 2003. The pump-and-treat system consists of 57 recovery wells, a central water treatment system, 43 injection wells, and an infiltration gallery. From 2003 until 2010, the extracted water was treated to remove chromium using ion exchange. The effluent criterion was the maximum contaminant level for total chromium (100 μg/L). In 2010, procurement of a replacement system was initiated. One of the proposals received proposed an advanced oxidation process that would eliminate off site regeneration of ion exchange resin and would result in a significant reduction in operating costs. However, this technology had never been used for the removal of hexavalent chromium. A series of bench and pilot scale tests were conducted to demonstrate the applicability of this technology.
