Background/Objectives. Several soil and groundwater investigations during the 1980s revealed a major chlorinated hydrocarbon (CHC) contamination caused by maintenance activities. The contamination consisted of predominantly of CHC (tetrachloroethene [PCE]) and petroleum hydrocarbon (including BTEX) from a heating plants and hazardous material storage areas. Several soil vapor and groundwater extraction systems were installed in 1991 to remove the CHC contamination from the subsurface. Between 1991 and 2001, the systems were able to remove 2,110 kg of CHC from the subsurface. In 2001, the soil vapor extraction (SVE) activities were terminated due to decreased concentrations and low efficiency. They continued with pump and treat (P&T) in the source area until February 2010. At this time, annual extracted mass of CHC decreased to approximately 40 kg.
